Batley Boys faced local rivals Dewsbury Celtic in their fisrt ever competitive fixture on Saturday, with the game living up expectations
Batley started strongly as they looked to take control against a big Celtic side and a break from Kyle Foley on the left side opened the scoring. Celtic came back strongly but great tackling from Jarrad Kirk, Owen West and Harry Brearey kept Batley in front. It was Batley who further extended their lead as Jack Broadbent broke the line to make it 8-0. With Paul Scott, Morgan Oates and Josh Ward on top form as well as most improved Charlie Sandell making good yards it looked like that would be the half time score but Celtic broke through on the stroke of half time to leave it at 8-4.
With Celtic now firmly back in the game they started the second half stongly and a good move resulted in them finding their way over again to level the scores. The game was now in the balance but a try saving tackle from top tackler Josh Scrutton and a superb defensive set swung the momentum back in the boys favour. A quick-fire double from Spectators man of the match Kyle Foley and a try saving takle from Joe Hyland gave Batley a good lead. With the boys relaxing they began to use the ball much more effectively as playmakers Liam Rush, James Smith, Charlie Dransfield and Kyle Render stamped their authority on the game. Good attacking moves involving Luke Slack, Dylan Hodgson and Brad McCann stretched the Celtic defense before Kyle Foley scored his 4th of the game. The scoring was completed as Man of the match James Smith dummied and found a gap to make the final score 30-8 to Batley Boys.
