Batley Boys U12s travelled to Siddal in the first game of the 2012 YJARL summer season on Saturday but came away empty handed as they put in a below par performance.
Batley started the brighter as they took an early lead through a Kyle Foley try, converted by Liam Rush and looked like they were capable of kicking on from there. However what followed was a string of unforced errors which gave Siddal the opportunity to hit back, and they did so in style as they scored four unanswered tries to go in at half time with a comfortable 24-6 lead.
Batley looked to come back after the break as they looked to go back to basics and again started the half brightly. Reward came as man of the match Kyle Foley crossed again giving Batley renewed hope. Despite the much improved effort errors were still causing Batley problems but it was ironically a harsh call from the referee which gave Siddal possession deep in Batley territory and Siddal pounced to extend the lead. Batley continued to press and Charlie Sandell crossed before a final Siddal try completed a 36-16 victory.
Batley can take some comfort from a better second half performance but ultimately a completion rate of less than 30% tells the story and they must significantly improve on that to make any real impression in division 2.
